Medallion Signature Guarantee
What is a Medallion Signature Guarantee and why is it required?
A Medallion Signature Guarantee is a special certification required by transfer agents when securities such as shares or bonds are being transferred, sold, or re-registered. It confirms the authenticity of the signature and the legal authority of the person signing.
It is not the same as a notary.
How is a Medallion Signature Guarantee different from a notarisation?
A notary verifies identity only.
A Medallion Signature Guarantee confirms both identity and the financial authority behind the transaction and is backed by a STAMP or similar guarantee program recognised by transfer agents.
Most US securities transactions require a Medallion, not a notary.
Who typically needs a Medallion Signature Guarantee?
Common situations include:
- Executors transferring shares after a death
- Beneficiaries selling inherited securities
- Changes in registration (name changes, trust transfers)
- International holders of US or Canadian securities
We frequently assist attorneys and professionals handling estate matters.
Can you assist international or non-US residents?
Yes. We regularly assist international clients and cross-border estate cases where US securities are involved. Additional documentation may be required depending on the jurisdiction and transaction type.
What documentation is required?
Documentation depends on the transaction but typically includes:
- Government-issued identification
- Supporting transfer documentation
- Probate or estate documentation (if applicable)
- Transfer agent forms
We review documentation before issuing a Medallion to reduce the risk of rejection.
How long does the process take?
Timeframes vary depending on documentation and complexity. Once documents are reviewed and approved, we aim to process promptly. We will outline expected timelines at the start of the engagement.
